Finding Potential in the Pivots for Mental Health Therapists & Financial Therapists

Croswaite Counseling, PLLC is a consultation practice in Lafayette, CO serving mental health therapists and financial therapists. Khara Croswaite Brindle, as the owner of Croswaite Counseling, PLLC, is proud to be an NBCC Approved Continued Education Provider (ACEP), Approved Clinical Supervisor, Financial Therapist Supervisor, Professional Consultant, 2x Amazon #1 Best-Selling Author, and Certified Financial Therapist (CFT).

So. Many. Pivots!

I’ve been known to call myself the queen of pivots! When I reflect on the last 17 years in the field, I notice a personal pattern of big shifts every two years or so. Building things. Ending things. Launching things. Sunsetting things. To a stranger, it may look restless or indecisive, but to me the pivots represent my entrepreneurial brain and signify the internal shifts happening as I do the work to remove workaholism and hyperproductivity from my life. Not to mention pivoting in response to the external shifts happening to the mental health industry. We’ve been thrown plenty of curve balls in the last twenty years with things like pay cuts, increased insurance audits, colleague losses, and third parties and/or AI trying to override the human connection within the therapeutic relationship to save a few dollars. I don’t use AI anywhere in my business. As you may have guessed, I’m not about any of that. Instead I feel called to help clinicians feel seen and supported in the pivots, navigating things like:

1) downsizing, pivoting, or closing their practice

2) grieving a client loss

3) overcoming financial scarcity

4) healing from leadership trauma

5) building secondary income against burnout

4 out of 5 would agree

Notice that four of the five things listed above aren’t talked about openly within the mental health industry. They are considered secretive, scary, shameful or come with judgement from our community. Where do we go to grieve as a clinician survivor of client suicide? How do we work with the identity shifts that happen when we close our practice or end something in order to launch something new? Who can we talk to about financial stress and noble poverty without judgement? When do we make time to process the leadership trauma that informed our people-pleasing and workaholic behaviors in this field?

I find meaning in creating spaces for all of it. Whether it be group or individual work, 4 of the 5 things feel heavy and I’m still ready to talk about them!

Why work with me?

Well the short answer is I’ve experienced all five things I want to help other therapists navigate. I downsized my group practice of 8 years back to solo in January 2024. I lost a client to suicide in Spring 2021. I ugly-cried through my own financial therapy work in early 2021 before pursuing certification. I’ve dedicated my 12 year clinical supervision role to NOT being a traumatic leader. And I’ve built out 14 income streams to avoid being a full-blown workaholic.

Colleagues choose to work with me because I’m:

  • A clinician survivor

  • A trainer and TEDx speaker

  • A published author of 12 books

  • A consultant

  • An Enneagram Professional

  • A professor

  • An entrepreneur

  • A mom

It’s a balancing act daily to do all the things we value and enjoy, and it comes with challenges and lessons along the way. My commitment to colleagues is to create welcoming spaces to do the hard work. The work of healing. Crying. Catharsis. The pivots. Because new things are possible when we pivot. Pruning out the old makes room for the new.

Productivity over Busyness

Part of my own journey has been to adjust my pace, slow down, and declare 2026 my anti-hustle year. Passive income is what we all dream about. To create something and make money from the sales of it with minimal effort. To work SMARTER not harder. To work less and still make money! But an even more important goal is productivity over busyness. We live in a culture that is all about the busy, the go-go-go. So we need to ask ourselves, “is this productivity, or is this busyness?” Productivity leads to progress and feelings of satisfaction. Busyness leads to burnout.

The dream of doing less starts with a pivot.

Secondary income may feel the safest of the five things I can offer. Folks choose me because of the income streams I hold, including on-demand courses, course royalties, book sales, workshops, retreats, supervision, consultation, online groups, and more. I am a consultant full of entrepreneurial spirit and compassion for the therapist’s desire for financial steadiness. We all want and deserve financial stability and secondary income is how we make it happen! After all, we can’t always predict high or low seasons of therapy work, our own burnout timeline, or the potential for a crisis where we can’t work the way we want to with our clients. Secondary income allows spaciousness, peace of mind, and a plan for the highs and lows of business.

Income Streams I’ve helped colleagues build and launch over the years:
-Public Speaker/Trainer

-Consultant

-Clinical Supervisor

-On-Demand Course Creation

-Published Books

-Digital Downloads

-Financial Therapy Specialty

Not to mention time. So let’s get started with a brainstorm and build your plan from there. After all, if it’s not scheduled, it doesn’t happen. Consultation with me can happen on a biweekly, monthly, or every other month basis. The investment is $185 per meeting which includes tools and resources on top of the consultation hour. You can schedule meetings as you need them through my online calendar.

My consultation style serves to empower you and hold you accountable to tasks or “homework” between our secondary income meetings for momentum on your income stream timeline. Mind you, the tasks are collaboratively identified and bite-sized so you see progress without feeling overwhelmed. After all, you are a business owner wanting to avoid burnout and we aim to make this work well amidst other business and life commitments you hold.

Heal from Client Suicide as a Clinician

1 in 4 therapists will have a client die by suicide during their career and yet we don’t talk about it because of confidential grief. Confidential grief describes the secrecy of mental health professionals’ pain and grief when losing a client to suicide because we feel we cannot talk about it.

You are not alone. I am part of the statistic and as a compassionate consultant, speaker, trainer, and published author, I want to help more clinicians heal.
